Comparison of Gymkhana and Gymkhana Match Racing

GYMKHANA:
In gymkhana the riders competes one at a time.  After a rider enters the arena,  the rider may start their run and cross the Start line at any reasonable time after the judge indicates that the rider has control of their mount.

An electronic timer determines the rider’s On Course time as defined below:

Rider’s "On Course" time = The time elapsed between the riders crossing the start/finish line to begin the course
and crossing the start/finish line to complete the course.

GYMKHANA MATCH RACING
In gymkhana match racing one to four riders compete at a time. An electronic timing system is used to insure that all riders have an equal opportunity for a fair start and to obtain a Match Race time as defined below:

Rider’s Match Race time = Time elapsed from the "Start" horn
until the rider crosses the start/finish line upon completing the course.

1.  Match Race Procedure:  Each rider will have an equal opportunity for a fair start through use of the following procedure

a.  As the first rider enters the arena to go to his/her assigned lane,  the announcer announces that “The System is On”  and the automated timing system begins.

b.  Fifteen (15) seconds later a “Get Ready” horn is sounded.   This 15 second period may be increased as required to accommodate unusually large arenas or arenas with unconventional gate locations.  Any change will be announced prior to the change and the time will remain constant throughout the remainder of the show.

       c.  Five (5) seconds later a “Start” horn is sounded.

NOTES:  A rider may cross the timing line any time after the “Start” horn.  The objective for the rider is to cross the timing line as close to "Start" horn as possible but not before it.  If the rider crosses the start line before "Start" horn, the rider is disqualified.  The overall proficiency of a rider in match racing is determined by the rider’s proficiency in both his/her "Start" and "On Course" capabilities.

2.   Rider Start Time.   A riders Start time is defined as follows:

Start time =  Time elapsed between the "Start" horn
and the rider crossing the start/finish line to begin the course.

Match racing requires that a rider have good control of his/her mount so that the Start line will be crossed as close to the "Start" time as possible and at the proper speed for the event being run.  The speed at which a rider may run throughout the course of an event varies with the distance between obstacles and the turns that must be negotiated
