Educational Opportunities
A New Priority
It’s not just about having horse shows! It’s about giving something back to our community. It’s about teaching our young to set goals and to work within a framework of rules to achieve those goals. It’s about keeping their interests and having fun while they learn. It’s about getting them involved in equestrian activities where they will be required to interact with their mount. Where they will develop problem solving methods while dealing with their mounts that will serve them well when interacting with other people throughout their life.
RHR Gymkhana has the wherewithal to significantly aid in the overall development of our youth. We have found that we attract riders of all levels from the rank amateur to some of the best horsemen in the area. Along the way we have found that the average rider knows their sport but is often not that proficient with the basics. This is particularly true when it comes to children. Parents often are not horsemen themselves and consequently buy their child a horse and turn them loose never becoming aware until it may be too late that safety and knowledge are absolutely essential requirements if you’re going to safely be around horses. Often those parents that do recognize the need for educating their child find it very expensive and consequently most children go without formalized instruction.
We in RHR Gymkhana are in a position to do something about this problem and give something back to the community at the same time. We have an awards program that attracts riders. We have a strict set of rules that must be adhered to. We have shows where riders can compete against other (and against themselves) to earn those year end awards. Because we have a standardized program and standardized events, we are able to give the riders an accurate measure of their current ability and their progress toward achieving their goal.
Recognizing this RHR Gymkhana Board of Directors has decided to do something about this void of education in our youth. We are putting together an educational program for our youth that will cover the numerous facets of good horsemanship. Clinics will be put on at our expense, free to children under 18 and will cover whatever subjects are needed by our various Show Centers. Clinics will likewise be available to adults on a space available basis for a small fee. We have appointed Orlando Alamillo as our Educational Director and Orlando has already begin making clinics available to our show centers. To date we have conducted 9 clinics designed primarily for children with horses. We are currently planning clinics for the less fortunate children who only dream of being involved in horse activities. This type of clinic will be offered to the various Scouting Programs then to other child care providers.
